Community picnic on July 8

The Friends of the Jacobus Vanderveer House & Museum will welcome military families, local residents, veterans, and state, county and municipal officials to a community picnic from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 8, at River Road Park in Bedminster. The event will feature a Field of Honor display of 200 3’ x 5’ American flags at River Road Park. Live musical entertainment will be provided by the band Hoi Polloi. Admission is free and food and beverages will be available for purchase. The event will support Raising The Bar(N), the Friends’ Capital Campaign to raise an early 19th century barn on the grounds of the Vanderveer property. Old Bridge violinist to perform at library

Internationally known violinist Alexei Yavtuhovich will perform a solo concert of Bach’s greatest compositions at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at the Old Bridge Public Library, 1 Old Bridge Plaza at the corner of Rt. 516 and Cottrell Road in the Old Bridge Municipal Center.  During the concert, Yavtuhovich of Old Bridge also will lecture informally about Bach and his body of work. Yavtuhovich will perform as part of the Library’s Second Saturday Concert Series and as the third installment of its Collegium Musicum Concert Series. Born in Belarus, Yavtuhovich was a member of the prestigious Belarus State Concert Orchestra and Belarus String Quartet and has performed extensively internationally. Attendants are requested to bring a non-perishable, unexpired donation for the Old Bridge Food Pantry to the free event. The final Collegium Musicum concert, featuring vocalists and a keyboardist performing “Songs My Mother Taught Me: Art Songs of Eastern Europe," will at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11. Additional information is available at www.oldbridgelibrary.org.  

Artist opens show in Lambertville

New Jersey-based artist Leeza Hernandez invites residents to the opening reception of her solo art show, “CORNERS,” at 6 tonight in Lambertville. The artist, whose acrylic work will makes its public debut this month, explores the journey we take through varying life stages that force us to uproot into new environments. From relocation to expansion to empty nesting, separation and beyond, her paintings extract emotion out of the home-buying (and selling) process. The British artist moved to the U.S. almost 20 years ago. The theme of the show was created for the gallery space — the real estate offices of Callaway Henderson Sotheby's International Realty at 49 Bridge St. in Lambertville. The artist's work was created using acrylic, graphite, oil pastels and charcoal on wood panels or canvas. Sizes range from 6x6" to 36x48". All paintings will be available for purchase.The show runs through Aug. 31.

Financial Literacy Course on July 11

The next Somerset Community Action Financial Literacy Course will be on Consumer Protection and will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, at the SCAP Program Center, 155 Pierce St., Somerset section of Franklin Township. Enter through the first door on the left. Flemington Flea, a new monthly flea market event featuring antiques, collectibles and special finds, will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 8. The event will cover walkable locations from Main Street to the Stangl Road complex. Antique and vintage finds will be displayed at The Flemington Filling Station and Camp Flemington Antiques. Memorial Poker Run on July 7

The 5th Annual Jo-Jo Kolbasowski Memorial Poker Run to benefit veterans will be held on Saturday, July 7, at American Legion Post 253, 60 Devoe Ave., Spotswood. Free paper-shredding event

A free mobile paper-shredding event for personal documents will be held from 9 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m., rain or shine, on Thursday, July 12 at Rahway River Park on St. Georges Ave. in Rahway. The event will end before 1 p.m. if the shredding trucks reach capacity. All Union County residents can use the paper-shredding service. Limit of four 10-pound bags or boxes per person. It is preferred that residents bring their documents in paper bags. Documents should not be bound. Plastic binders and paper clips should be removed. Paper that is wet or damp will not be accepted. Residents should continue to recycle non-confidential papers and magazines with their municipal recycling program. Concert celebrates Bernstein's birthday

The Westfield Community Concert Band, under the direction of Dr. Thomas Connors, concludes its Thursday evening Summer Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, with a concert program celebrating the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein and featuring flute soloist Helen Bartolick. Photography exhibit opens July 7

The Barron Arts Center in Woodbridge will present “The Spirit of Feria: Photography Exhibit.” The exhibit runs Saturday, July 7, through Sunday, July 22. Artist reception 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, July 9.
