By Mabvuto Kambuwe in Tunis, Tunisia:
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Second Vice President Lameck Khonje has said they are optimistic that Malawi National Football Team Coach Kalisto Pasuwa will succeed with his project.
Khonje said this after the Flames went down to Tunisia in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.
They suffered a 2-0 defeat to the hosts at Stade Olympique Hammadi Agrebi in Tunis, Tunisia, on Monday.
“We are on the right track. We played well against Tunisia and the players gave their all, which is giving us hope that this project will yield results. We are happy with the attitude of the players,” Khonje said.
Meanwhile, Pasuwa has said he would use the remaining 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifying matches to continue with his rebuilding exercise.
Pasuwa was reacting as the Flames were no longer in contention for a spot.
But the Zimbabwean said the matches would be crucial for him to build a strong team that can compete against the giants of African football.
“We, as coaches, need to have results on our table in every match we play. The matches will help us to gauge where we are as Malawi and also the players we have in camp to match [the] so-called giants of African football. We will also use the matches to try other new players,” Pasuwa said.
The Flames have remained with two home matches against Equatorial Guinea and Liberia.
They will play away matches against Namibia and Sao Tome and Principe.
Currently, the Flames are fifth in group H, where they have six points from six matches, 10 points behind leaders Tunisia.
