The Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced on Friday that it has tightened restrictions on importing American cattle due to concerns about avian influenza.
The first confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) among a herd of dairy cattle on March 25, and the second human case in two years on April 1, have increased fears in the US about the virus spreading among animals and humans.
The statement mentioned that the food inspection agency has enhanced the conditions for importing dairy cattle from the United States as of April 29.
The agency stated that the conditions for importing cattle from the US now include providing negative results for HPAI testing for dairy cattle, inspecting milk at the retail level for any traces of the HPAI strain, and conducting voluntary testing for cows that show no signs of the virus.
Since 2022, avian influenza has affected over 90 million chickens and more than 9,000 wild birds in the US, along with 34 herds of dairy cattle.
Additionally, one person in Texas who had close contact with infected cattle and another person who had contact with poultry were also affected.
